Thirteen contestants competed for top honors in the Butterfly Effect Project’s Second Annual Harvest Festival and Cook-off today on the grounds of First Baptist Church of Riverhead.
The contestants served up delectable dishes across a variety of cuisines to festival-goers for sampling and voting.
Virginia Carpenter’s butternut squash soup, served with a side of carrot bread, took top honors.
DeAndre Williams took second place with his scalloped potatoes.
Joan Hendrix-Smith came in third with her broccoli cornbread.
The cook-off was judged by visitors to the festival who paid $10 for a plate overflowing with samples.
There were lots of other food offerings for sale by vendors at today’s festival, which also featured craft vendors, jewelry makers and more.
The festival is a fundraiser for the Butterfly Effect Project, a youth services organization headquartered in Riverhead. BEP was founded in 2014 by Tijuana Fulford to empower children in underserved communities and give them an opportunity to grow and develop and find their way in the world at large.
