Riverhead kids competed to win a brand-new bicycle last week in the annual bike rodeo hosted by the Riverhead Police Athletic League.
Kids in grades kindergarten through six were eligible for the competition Saturday morning at Stotzky Park, riding a challenging course aimed at testing their bicycle-handling and safe riding skills. Riverhead Town police officers coached the kids and graded their performance as they navigated circles, narrow paths and figure eights.
Two kids who earned the highest point tally in each of three grade groups won first prize and went home with new bicycles. Two more contestants won new bikes for “impressive riding.”

The second-, third- and fourth-prize winners in each grade group won two tickets to Splish Splash, and Target gift cards ($50 and $25).
Other prizes were awarded in each of the three age groups for attitude, enthusiasm and effort, and they took home gift certificates from the Long Island Aquarium, Country Time Cycle, Snowflake Ice Cream, Dari-Land Ice Cream, Star Confectionery, Bean & Bagel Cafe, I-HOP and Cucina 25.
Bikes were donated by Riverhead Police PBA, Riverhead Superior Officers Association, Alexander Rothwell Funeral Home, Riverhead Building Supply, Tuthill Mangano Funeral Home, Church of the Harvest and RiverheadLOCAL.
In all, 43 children participated in this year’s bike rodeo event.
