Canadian wildfires will continue to make air quality unhealthy for sensitive groups tomorrow, as smoke and haze from the fires increase fine particulates in the air in the Long Island, NYC and other areas of the state, New York State environment and health officials said today.

An air quality health advisory is in effect for the Long Island, New York City metro, Hudson Valley and Adirondack regions from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Saturday.

The new advisory effectively extends an air quality health advisory that has been in effect for Long Island since Wednesday morning and was scheduled to remain in effect until 11:59 p.m. today.

The air quality index for Riverhead at 5 p.m. was 157, which is considered unhealthy for everyone. An AQI between 100 and 150 is considered “unhealthy for sensitive groups.” The AQI forecast for today was 120, according to the EPA’s AirNow website, but this afternoon, the AQI rose to readings in the “unhealthy for all” range.
