The brutal heat that has gripped other parts of the nation has arrived locally. Heat index values may reach as high as 100 Thursday and Friday, the National Weather Service said in a heat advisory issued this afternoon. The heat advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. Thursday through 9 p.m. Friday.
An air quality health advisory is also in effect Wednesday evening through 11 p.m. and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. for the Long Island and New York City Metro regions. The pollutant of concern is ground-level ozone.
People should limit outdoor activities during the heat of the day, Riverhead Town Police said in a weather and travel advisory tonight.
The Riverhead Town Senior Center on Shade Tree Lane in Aquebogue will be open to the community as a cooling center Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
Riverhead Free Library will also be open Thursday until 8 p.m. and Friday until 5 p.m. All are welcome to stop in, cool down and read a book, according to the town’s travel and weather advisory.
Town beaches at Wading River, Reeves Beach, Iron Pier and South Jamesport will be staffed with lifeguards until 6 p.m. on both days, police said..
Police advise residents to check on vulnerable friends, family and neighbors and remember their pets, making sure they are kept in the shade and have plenty of water.
