The Riverhead Central School District notified families last night of what it called “a non-specific threat” made by a student on the Riverhead Middle School for Friday.

The district immediately launched and investigation and notified Riverhead Police, who opened their own investigation, according to the notice, sent from Interim Superintendent William Galati.

District officials, working with law enforcement identified the student who made the threat, Galati said in the notice, sent just before 7 p.m. Thursday via the district’s Parent Square portal.

“We have contacted and spoken with the student and their family,” Galati said.

The district cannot share specific information about the student or the threat, in compliance with privacy law, Galati said.

Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with the district’s Student Code of Character, Conduct and Support, Galati said.

“Safety and security are our top priorities,” he said in the notice.

“We would like to remind our students and their families that if you see or hear something that is of concern, please report it immediately to district office or your child’s building administration, a teacher or Riverhead Town Police,” Galati wrote.

He reminded families that they can share information or concerns on the “Share It” app, which can be found on the district website.
