A coastal flood warning remains in effect until noon today. Moderate to major flooding is forecast for vulnerable coastal areas along the Peconic River and bays and Long Island Sound.
Peak time for flooding along the Peconic River is the morning high tide, which is predicted to occur at 7 a.m. today. Tides will be 4 to 4 ½ feet above normal, according to the National Weather Service.
There are scattered minor power outages across Riverhead Town, where fewer than 100 customers are without power this morning, according to PSEG-Long Island’s website. More than 300 customers have no power in Southold Town this morning; 228 of those customers are in the hamlet of Southold.
Windy weather continues this morning, with local weather stations along the Sound reporting 25 mph sustained winds out of the north. Winds yesterday and last night gusted at 50 to 60 mph across the region, according to reports published by the National Weather Service.
The high wind warning in our area expired at 2 a.m.
Two trees were downed during the storm, Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski said this morning. A tree on Pulaski Street in Polish Town came down on a vehicle yesterday afternoon. The occupant, who was injured in the incident, was able to exit the vehicle and took shelter in a nearby business.
A large tree came down on Edgar Avenue this morning at around 6 a.m. and was blocking part of the roadway. The fallen tree impacted a wire and police were investigating to determine if the wire is a power line.
The storm dropped more than 2 inches of rain across the county yesterday, according to National Weather Service reports.
Many roads across Riverhead had significant flooding, Zaleski said. Crews will be out all day today and tomorrow clearing debris and cleaning storm drains, he said.
