Kids ask the darndest things!  My grandkiddos Nova and  Luca heard something about  angels over the Easter holiday. On a recent Facetime they fired these questions at me in rapid succession:

Nova: “Ammie do you believe in angels ?”

Me: “Well I”…..

Before  I could utter the next word Luca asked:

“Ammie do you believe angels are like  super-heroes?”

I hesitated a nano-second before Nova said:

“Ammie I was an angel at the Christmas pageant; you said I was your angel.”

Luca:  “Ammie do angels  swing around like  Spider Man?  I know what Spider Man looks like, but do angels look like Nova?

My relief was palpable when their mom called them to dinner.  I am visiting them next week.  Methinks  it’s  wise to prepare myself for another go-around about angels.

I’m a pragmatic woman.  I like orderliness to my life. My  practical side will dismiss events as chance, fate, luck or being in the right place at the right time.

At this time in my life, I seem to embrace the likelihood of an event having a mystical quality more times than not.  Even so, I have never seen an angel, except for Nova.

When I was a child, I prayed to my guardian angel, her name was Rachel.  She was always available to listen to my concerns and fears.  I believed she had a telephone line straight to heaven.

Rachel became utterly impractical during my teens.  I would have been seriously uncool to have a relationship with an invisible creature who took to hanging out on my shoulder.

Even if Rachel was sitting on my shoulder nowadays,  I might have overlooked her presence.  Like many, I live a  busy, sometimes chaotic, hurley-burley life.  We may be distracted by constant pings of our devices.  Sometimes we mindlessly  scroll on social media never absorbing anything of merit.

Sometimes we are so inattentive, we may miss the extraordinary in the ordinary.  Digging deep I realize there have been instances in my life that had a mystical quality.

Did you ever get a hunch—that gut feeling that we cannot ignore?  Maybe an angel nudging us?

Consider that person who says the right thing at the right time.  An angel in human form?

The stranger who comes out of nowhere to provide help and then “poof” disappears.  Was that stranger heaven sent?

Dreams that are so profound and vivid that they seem prophetic.  An angel visitation?

Deceased loved ones who appear in dreams and offer guidance. Angel inspired?

Do you have people in your life who  offer unconditional love and support?  I believe these people have joined and blessed me on my journey through life for a reason—and that reason is made manifest sooner or later. Perhaps these people, along with Rachel,  are my own special angels.

Almost three years ago, I felt a nudge that I wanted to ignore.  Well-meaning friends wanted to “set me up”  (yup even at a certain age) with their friend.  He summered in Jamesport.  I had never set eyes on him—nor at this juncture did I intend to.  I declined my friends numerous invitations.

On a beautiful June day, I was heading home from the beach on my bicycle and literally ran into a man who was heading to the beach on his bicycle. He  said: “Maybe you should watch where you are going.”

I gave him a withering look!

Then a nudge. I asked:  “Are you Joe?

“Yes.”

“We were supposed to meet,” said I.

His reply:  “We just did.”

Humph!

However as fate would have it, we continued to meet by chance.  Then one day he asked me on a date—and on  another and another.  After two dead husbands, a runaway boyfriend, I took a leap of faith. I couldn’t have landed in a better place.  I am convinced  that angel Rachel is still around.

I will tell Luca and Nova, yes Ammie believes in angels and they do have super-powers. Angels come in many different guises.  A friend, priest,  teacher, the checkout lady at the supermarket and Nova.   Heaven does not have dibs on angels.

Folks, if you open your mind, you may find that celestial encounters are happening right here on earth.   If you are still skeptical, check out the words of St. Paul: “Some entertain angels unaware.”
