Updated (11:30 a.m.) Riverhead Police are seeking witnesses to and information about a motor vehicle accident Monday afternoon on Route 25A in Wading River that seriously injured a bicyclist.

Police said officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident Monday at approximately 1:50 p.m. on Route 25A in Wading River, between East Wind Drive and Hulse Landing Road.

Responding officers determined that a motor vehicle westbound on Route 25A struck a male bicyclist also traveling westbound in the travel portion of the roadway, according to a police press release issued late Monday night.

Police have identified the cyclist as Edward Gallagher, 77, of Wading River.

Gallagher sustained serious physical injuries and was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Wading River Fire Department, police said. 

The driver of the vehicle, a 29-year-old female, remained on scene and was interviewed by the Riverhead Police Department Detective Division, according to the police report. 

The New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Team responded to assist with the investigation.  The accident appears to be non-criminal, police said.
