Suffolk County Police rescued four people from the Long Island Sound off Wading River beach last night.
Police said the four people were in two canoes that capsized and they went overboard into 58-degree water. One of the canoers called 911 at 7:23 p.m., according to a SCPD press release.
Suffolk County Police Department Aviation Section officers located the people in the water at about 7:48 p.m. approximately three-quarters of a mile off Wading River beach, according to the press release. The aviation unit directed a Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau vessel to the location of the individuals in the water and pulled them from the water and onto the police boat. They were then transferred to a Sound Beach Fire Department vessel. Three of the four were wearing life preservers, police said.
Darwin Ortis, 32, of Mastic Beach, Adrian Zelaya 32, of Central Islip, Walter Noriega, 47, of Mastic Beach, and Gelyn Linairs, 41, of Mastic Beach, were transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for treatment of hypothermia, police said.
