Riverhead Police are investigating a motor vehicle accident on West Lane in Aquebogue last night that injured a woman walking along the road with her two young children.

Police said a woman, age 38, walking with her 7-year-old child and a 4-month-old infant, who was in a baby stroller, was struck by a car operated by a 66-year-old woman at about 8:13 p.m. Tuesday. 

The woman was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of her injuries, according to the police report. Her 7-year-old daughter, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and the woman’s 4-month-old son were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps for treatment and observation, police said. Police did not characterize the extent or nature of the mother’s injuries.

The vehicle, a 2015 Cadillac, was northbound on West Lane south of  Chris Court, when it struck the pedestrians, who were walking northbound  on the road, police said. The operator of the vehicle reported no injuries, according to the report.

Police did not release the identities of the vehicle operator or the adult pedestrian injured in the accident.

The Riverhead Police Department Detective Division and the New York State Police Forensic Investigation Unit both responded to the scene of the incident to assist in the investigation., which is not considered to be criminal at this time, according to a Riverhead Police Department press release issued overnight.  There are no criminal charges pending against the vehicle operator, police said.
