Potentially heavy rain Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning could cause flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas, the National Weather Service in New York said in a statement Monday afternoon.

While much of the flooding is expected to be localized, significant flooding is possible due to rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, the weather service said.

A flood watch is currently in effect from 12 noon Tuesday until 12 noon Wednesday.

Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action, the Riverhead Town Police Department said in a weather advisory Monday evening.

Anyone in need of assistance due to flooding should call the police department at 631-727-4500. In case of an emergency, dial 911.
