UPDATE – AUG. 8, 6:55 a.m.: The passenger in the overturned vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on County Road 105 Wednesday evening, Riverhead Police said in a press release Thursday morning. The operator of the overturned vehicle was charged with felony driving while intoxicated.

(Aug. 7, 7:38 p.m.) A multi-vehicle fatal crash on County Road 105 this evening has the road shut down in both directions between Flanders Road and Riverside Drive.

The crash occurred on the north end of the Cross River Drive bridge at about 6:15 pm.

One car overturned and a second car had heavy front-end damage. At least three other vehicles and a truck were involved.

Riverhead Police, Riverhead Fire Department, Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Flanders Northampton Volunteer Ambulance rushed to the scene at about 6:15 p.m.

Police officers could be seen working to right the overturned car to allow EMS workers to access anyone trapped inside.

A Riverhead Fire Department heavy rescue unit was called to the scene. A Suffolk Police Medevac helicopter landed at Indian Island Golf Course to transport one patient to Stony Brook University Hospital.

The number of victims injured and transported is not known at this time. There is no information available yet on their condition.  

County Road 105 will be closed until early morning for an accident investigation, Riverhead Police said in an emailed statement tonight.

Motorists should use alternative routes.
