To the Editor:

In 1973 I was working nights at a cargo terminal at Kennedy Airport. A man came in to pick up plants from France; he told me that they were vines that were to be planted on his land in Cutchogue and how it would change the North Fork. We know who that man is, and we know how the North Fork has changed.

The North Fork has been promoted and continues to be promoted for good reason because it is good for business. In addition to all the vineyards, we have the pumpkin festival, the strawberry festival, the garlic festival, horseradish festival, and what else now, resorts on the Sound?

It has a catchy name “agri-tourism.” It’s a fact that our roads cannot handle the traffic that is created at various times. The traffic that will be created by the resorts will be year-round. What is all of this doing to the environment and the quality of life of the people who live here, vote here and pay taxes here? Do our elected officials care about the people that they are supposed to represent or are they drunk with the lure of increasing the tax base? It’s ok to be pro-business, but not PRO BUSINESS. Not all “progress” is good. There was a line from a popular movie that comes to mind: “If you build it, they will come.”
