A motorcyclist died after crashing into the woods on County Road 51 late last night, Southampton Town Police said in a press release this morning.
Rafael Andre Penalas, age 28, of Bayport, New York, was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.
Officers responded to a 911 call about debris in the roadway on County Road 51 in the southbound lanes near the county center at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the press release.
The 911 caller reported that just prior to seeing the debris in the roadway a motorcycle had passed the caller’s vehicle traveling in the same direction at a high rate of speed, police said.
Southampton Town Police, State Troopers, Flanders Fire Department, Flanders Northampton Ambulance and Suffolk County Sheriffs responded to the location.
The caller, meanwhile, had located the crashed motorcycle, according to the police report. Police located the operator of the bike, who was unconscious and seriously injured, police said.
No criminality is suspected.
