The Harlem Wizards came to town last night for their annual romp against the RCFA All-Stars on the basketball court at Riverhead High School. The outcome of the game — the Wizards dealt the All Stars their 10th consecutive loss — may not have been unexpected, but there were plenty of surprises on the court and off to entertain another sellout crowd.
Thanks to an audience of more than 800 people and 16 community sponsorships, the game raised a record-setting $19,000 for the RCFA Senior Scholarship Playing Fund, according to RCFA President Gregory Wallace. Despite the loss, “it was a great night for our students and community,” Wallace said.
The fundraising game has allowed the teachers union to do even more than award scholarships, Wallace said. “We teamed up with the Heart of Riverhead Civics Association to purchase books for our students, we have helped defray the cost of the senior banner, paid for elementary enrichment programs, and helped students and families experiencing extreme financial hardships,” he said.
“We are grateful to everyone who participated, supported, and came out to cheer,” Cherese Foster, RCFA All-Stars head coach and general manager, said. “Playing alongside the Harlem Wizards is always an unforgettable experience for many of our students and teachers. Our students had the chance to see their teachers outside the classroom setting, having fun, being athletic, and being silly,” Foster said.
