A winter weather advisory is in effect across Long Island this afternoon through early Monday morning.

Total snow accumulations between 3 and 5 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts up to 6 inches possible, the National Weather Service said in the advisory.

In a special weather statement issued this morning, the weather service warned of areas of black ice on untreated surfaces early this morning in local  areas with temperatures at or just below freezing. Pedestrians and motorists should plan on slippery road conditions and use extra caution if traveling this morning, according to the statement.

A winter storm warning is in effect for noncoastal areas north and west of the city.

A small craft advisory is in effect for the waters of the Long Island Sound and the bays across the region.

“A developing low pressure system over the Mid-Atlantic today will gradually intensify this afternoon and slide south of the area resulting in widespread snowfall for the area,” forecasters in the National Weather Service in Upton said this morning.

“Light snow is expected to gradually move into the area early this afternoon from the southwest. It remains possible that coastal areas at least initially mix with rain,” the forecast says.

Snow is expected to become moderate to locally heavy at times into the late afternoon. Heavier snow is possible where banding develops, the weather service said, though the location of banding cannot yet be forecasted.

Snow will taper off from the southwest to the northeast tonight as the low pulls northeast of the area, according to the National Weather Service forecast. Most of the accumulating snowfall should be done by midnight, the weather service said.

Expect a cold, blustery week ahead, with temperatures staying below 30ºF until Friday, the NWS forecast said. Overnight temperatures will be in the teens tonight through Wednesday, with below-zero wind chill values.
