Riverhead Free Library will hold a budget information meeting this evening at 6 p.m. to review the library’s proposed 2025-2026 budget, which is up for a vote on April 8.

The library has proposed a $5.54 million operating budget for the next fiscal year, a 6.76% increase over the current year’s operating budget. It requires a tax levy of $5.2 million, an increase of 5.61% over the current year’s levy, resulting in a tax rate of $6.84 per $1,000 of assessed value, according to documents published by the library.

The meeting will also provide an opportunity for the public to meet the candidates for the library’s board of trustees, Carlos Alvarez, Mike Dubois and William Sandback. Alvarez and Sandback are each seeking a second term. Read the trustees biographies.

The library is governed by a nine-member board of trustees, each of whom is elected to a three-year term.

The budget vote and trustee election will take place on Tuesday, April 8, from 10 a.m.to 8 p.m. at the library. All residents of the Riverhead Central School District for at least 30 days who are U.S. citizens and at least 18 years of age are eligible to vote. Eligible residents who have not voted in a general, school district or library election in the past four years must re-register and should contact the Riverhead Central School District Clerk at 631-369-4724.

Editor’s note: An error in the date of the library vote originally recited in the final paragraph of this story has been corrected.
