Riverhead PAL held its annual bike rodeo Saturday at Stotzky Park. Forty-nine children in kindergarten through 6th grade participated, competing for the top scores in three age groups to win brand new bicycles and a host of other prizes.
The rodeo is a chance to teach kids important lessons about bicycle safety and provides an opportunity for them to test their riding skills on a specially made course.
It’s also a chance for kids to get to know Riverhead Town police officers, who score the competitors bike-handling abilities and speak with them about bike safety and rules of the road.
These girls and boys with the top scores in the rodeo won new bikes:
K-2nd grade: Cora Maher and Evan Corwin
3rd and 4th grades: Kymani Mojica, Leah Edmund and Timothy Donoughue
5th and 6th grades: Brooke Ceberek and Marko Kaniuk
Bicycles were donated by Riverhead Superior Officers Association and Riverhead PBA, Alexander Rothwell Funeral Home, Riverhead Building Supply and L.I. Ice & Fuel, Church of the Harvest Food Pantry, Our Future Generation and RiverheadLOCAL.
Second place winners in each age group won two tickets to Splish Splash, courtesy of Splish Splash.
Third place winners received $50 Target gift cards, courtesy of Riverhead PBA.
Fourth place winners received $40 gift cards from Dari Land Ice Cream.
Fifth place winners in each group won $25 Target gift cards, courtesy of Riverhead PBA.
Other awards were given in each age group for “awesome attitude,” “excellent effort,” “enthusiastic rider” and the “high-5 award.”
