Suffolk County’s vector control division will be applying pesticides today through Wednesday to control mosquito larvae in certain marshes across the county, including some in the Town of Riverhead, the Suffolk County Health Department announced in a press release issued this afternoon.
Marshes at Indian Island, Overlook in Aquebogue and Crescent Duck Farm in the Town of Riverhead.
In Southold Town, marshes in New Suffolk, Great Hog Neck, Kerwin Boulevard, Pipes Neck Creek and Pipes Cove in Southold. No marshes in Flanders are on the schedule, though marshes in North Sea and Dune Road (Overton) in the Town of Southampton are also scheduled for treatment. Certain marshes in Babylon, East Hampton, Islip and Brookhaven are also on the schedule for treatment this week, For information, see the county’s vector control division webpage or call the county’s Spray Information Hotline at 631-852-4939.
The application will take place Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 7 a.m. through 7 p.m., the health department said. Should weather prevent completion of the work, it will be continued on the next suitable day.
The vector control division will apply VectoPrime FG and Altosid. Both VectoPrime FG and Altosid are fine granule or pellet biological larvicides, according to the health department press release.
The products used by Suffolk County vector control are registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and are applied in accordance with the required state and federal permits, according to the press release.
No precautions are recommended to prepare for this spraying, as the helicopter will be flying at a very low level over marsh areas and taking other precautions to control drift into inhabited areas, the health department said. Human exposure from this operation is unlikely and the products involved have no significant human toxicity, the department said in the release.
