A 16-year-old driver died following a single-car crash on Sound Avenue Saturday night, Riverhead Town Police said in a press release Sunday afternoon.

Police responded to reports of a motor vehicle accident on Sound Avenue just east of Horton Avenue at approximately 9:22 p.m. on Sept. 27.

A maroon Honda Civic traveling eastbound on Sound Avenue struck a tree located in front of 3059 Sound Avenue, Calverton, according to a preliminary investigation, police said in the press release.

The driver of the Honda was identified as a 16-year-old Riverhead resident, police said. Police did not provide the identity of the driver in the press release.

The operator was transported by Peconic Bay Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased, according to the report. Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded and transported the male patient to PBMC, according to radio reports. Portions of Sound Avenue were closed to traffic for an investigation after the crash.
