River Road will be closed to through-traffic Thursday due to an infrastructure upgrade by the LIRR on the River Road railroad crossing.

The road will be closed to all but local traffic between West Main Street and the Long Island Expressway overpass from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday, Riverhead Police said in a press release Wednesday.

Local residents who reside in the area will be able to access their homes despite the closure, according to police.

MTA Police will be assisting the road closure, police said.
