Fifty families in need among the Riverhead High School community will have a full Thanksgiving dinner on their tables next week, thanks to the efforts of high school students, faculty and staff, local businesses and members of the Riverhead Lions Club.
Members of the Riverhead High School Key Club, Cooking Club and the Class of 2028, joined by other student volunteers, Key Club adviser Garrett Moore, Cooking Club and Class of 2028 adviser Roberta MacGray, and Riverhead restaurateur Jerry Dicecco Jr. of Jerry and the Mermaid to fill 50 baskets with a Thanksgiving turkey and all the trimmings, plus a $20 Aldi gift card, at the high school yesterday afternoon.
Their Thanksgiving dinner project — going on for about four years — is supported by fundraising and donations from Dicecco, Lisa Pickersgill of Robert James Salon, the Riverhead Lions Club and the “powder puff” football game, a student-led fundraising initiative.
The baskets are distributed to families in need identified by school social workers, McGray said.
