Heavy snow is expected in the local area from Friday evening through midday Saturday, with total snow accumulations between 4 and 8 inches, according to the National Weather Service.
Highest amounts are expected from near Riverhead west, with 2 to 5 inches likely across the twin forks, the weather service said.
A winter storm warning is in effect from 7 p.m. Friday through 1 p.m. Saturday.
The heaviest snow is expected to occur after 4 p.m. Friday through about 1 a.m. Saturday with lighter snowfall rates early Saturday, the weather service said. Travel will be impacted Friday evening into early Saturday morning.
“The snow will make for slippery conditions. If traveling Friday, reduce your speed and allow extra time,” the Riverhead Police Department said in a statement Thursday afternoon.
Arctic air out of southeast Canada will impact the region Thursday night, with temperatures bottoming out in the lower 20s, the weather service said. Breezy conditions are also expected Thursday evening with gusts of 25-30 mph, gradually diminishing overnight. Wind chills by early Friday will be in
the single digits to lower teens, according to the forecast.
A winter storm warning has been issued for eastern Suffolk and New Haven counties.
