Winter Storm Warning

Town highway crews worked overnight to clear main roads and are working on side streets and developments Saturday morning, Riverhead Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski said.

A winter storm warning is in effect from 7 p.m. Friday through 1 p.m. Saturday for heavy snow, with 4-8 in. of accumulations in Riverhead and 2-5 in. across the twin forks.

Bands of heavy snow began moving across the region late this morning, producing  snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, according to the National Weather Service in Upton. See photos from around Riverhead.

Updated -Tuesday at 6:15 a.m.: Coastal low tracking more to south than was forecast, reducing total snow accumulations expected to 5-8 inches. Winter storm warning remains in effect.

A blizzard warning has been issued for heavy snow and strong winds tonight through tomorrow night for eastern Suffolk County. North winds at 32 to 37 mph, gusting as high as 60 mph, will produce blizzard conditions, the National Weather Service said. Snow accumulations of 12-16 inches are forecast.

Heavy snow is falling across the region. A winter storm warning remains in effect until noon. Additional snow accumulations of 3-5 inches are expected before snow stops around 10-11 a.m.

A winter storm warning has been issued for Suffolk County, effective from midnight tonight until noon Friday.

Heavy snow is expected to make travel very difficult today. National Weather Service forecast says snow accumulations of six to nine inches are possible.

Heavy snow will pile up across the area Sunday, with accumulations of six to 10 inches on the East End, where snowfall rates could exceed two inches per hour Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

Heavy snow and blowing snow is making travel difficult. The governor has declared a state of emergency on Long Island, in NYC and the lower Hudson Valley. Roads are still passable but conditions are getting worse and nonessential travel should be postponed, the Riverhead highway superintendent said.
