Updated: 9 a.m. – A wind advisory is in effect for Long Island as a strong frontal system moves through the region, bringing the potential for damaging wind gusts and scattered power outages, according to the National Weather Service in Upton.

The advisory covers Suffolk and Nassau counties and is in effect from 2 p.m. Monday to 4 a.m. Tuesday. South winds of 15 to 25 mph are expected, with gusts up to 50 mph. Isolated gusts could reach 55 mph, the weather service said.

Forecasters said the strongest winds are expected Monday afternoon through Monday evening as the area moves into the warm sector ahead of a cold front.

A dense fog advisory has also been issued for Long Island, according to the National Weather Service in Upton. Visibility is expected to drop below one mile at times, the weather service said. The dense fog advisory is in effect until 11 a.m.

Periods of showers and thunderstorms are also expected through Monday night, with the potential for locally heavy downpours. The weather service said storm total rainfall is expected to be in the 1- to 2-inch range, with the main flooding concern being localized minor flooding in low-lying, urban and poor-drainage areas.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects, bring down tree limbs and cause a few power outages, the weather service said. Drivers should use extra caution, especially in high-profile vehicles, and residents should secure outdoor items.

Winds are expected to shift to the west late Monday night behind the cold front as colder air moves in. The weather service said conditions should turn drier Tuesday, though it will remain breezy with west wind gusts up to around 30 mph locally.
