The United States Power Squadrons will present “America’s Boating Course” (ABC) beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 25, 2026, at the Riverhead Free Library, 330 Court St., Riverhead.
Approved by New York State, the course is designed to help boaters meet the state’s boater education requirement under Brianna’s Law, which requires operators of motorized watercraft to complete a state-approved boating safety course. ABC is also approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and the U.S. Coast Guard.
The course consists of two sessions; it continues Saturday, May 2, and students must attend both dates. Topics include boating laws, required safety equipment, safe boating practices, navigation, emergencies, personal watercraft, charts, GPS, trailering and more.
Participants will receive the 244-page America’s Boating Course manual. After passing an exam, students will receive a completion certificate and wallet card indicating compliance with New York’s education requirement. Many insurance companies offer discounts to boaters who earn the certificate.
The fee is $65 and covers the cost of the manual. Students must be at least 10 years old on or before May 2, 2026.
To register online, visit pbps.us/education/schedule before April 10, 2026. For more information, call Helen Horton at 631-523-7889.
The course is presented locally by Peconic Bay Power Squadron, Eastern Long Island’s unit of the United States Power Squadrons, America’s Boating Club. The national organization has promoted safe boating through education since 1914.
