Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport has been designated a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission, expanding access to coordinated stroke care for East End residents.

The designation follows more than two years of planning, staff education and collaboration across the hospital’s multidisciplinary stroke team, according to Stony Brook Medicine. Hospital officials said the work involved meeting national standards for stroke care, patient safety and performance improvement.

The Joint Commission is an independent organization that accredits and certifies healthcare organizations based on quality and safety standards.

Hospital officials said the designation is especially significant for the North Fork, where the population includes a high proportion of older adults, who are at greater risk for stroke and related complications.

Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital is a 70-bed hospital serving the North Fork and Shelter Island. Officials said stroke care at the hospital is supported by coordinated protocols, rapid assessment, around-the-clock access to imaging and laboratory services, infection prevention measures and ongoing performance monitoring.

The hospital is part of Stony Brook Medicine and serves about 25,000 year-round residents, a number that grows substantially during the summer months.
