Areas of fog developed along coastal sections of Long Island early Sunday, reducing visibility to generally under 1 mile, according to the National Weather Service in Upton.
The weather service said the fog could become locally dense at times, with visibility approaching or dropping below one-quarter mile. The special weather statement is in effect until 10 a.m.
Motorists are urged to use extra caution while traveling and to use low-beam headlights.
The fog is occurring ahead of a warm front and an approaching cold front that will bring a period of rain to the region later Sunday, with a slight chance of thunder, the weather service said. Rainfall totals of about one-quarter inch to one-half inch are expected.
