An air quality health advisory is in effect for Long Island through 11 p.m. Sunday due to elevated levels of ground-level ozone, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
Outdoor air quality is expected to exceed an Air Quality Index value of 100 for ozone across Nassau and Suffolk counties, including the North Fork and Riverhead area, the advisory said. The AQI is a scale used to describe how polluted the air is and what associated health effects may be a concern. An AQI over 100 but lower than 150 is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. The AQI Sunday is forecast to reach 105.
State health officials recommend limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity when pollution levels are elevated. Those most sensitive include young children and people with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma, as well as people with heart disease. Anyone experiencing symptoms should consider consulting a physician, the advisory said.
The advisory comes as unseasonably warm, summerlike weather continues across the region. The National Weather Service said highs Sunday are expected to reach the 80s to around 90 in many locations, with cooler readings along the South Shore due to an onshore breeze.
