The Suffolk County Department of Health Services is reporting that a racoon found in Manorville has tested positive for rabies.

A Manorville resident made contact with a racoon on their property, the Suffolk County health department said in a press release Friday night. The health department did not disclose where in Manorville the animal was found or when it was found.

The racoon was picked up and later processed for rabies testing. The Suffolk County Department of Health Services was notified of the positive result by the Wadsworth Center at the New York State Department of Health.

The Manorville resident is being treated for potential rabies exposure, the health department said.

This is the 31st positive terrestrial rabies confirmation since February 2025, according to the press release. All prior cases were located in western Suffolk County, the department said. Health department employees believe the animal was likely relocated, possibly by another member of the public, according to the press release.

Officials ask anyone who may have transported a racoon from western Long Island to Manorville to contact the Department of Health Services at 631-854-0333 weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or 631-852-4820 outside business hours. The exposure could be a significant risk to their health.

Residents are reminded not to touch, or transport, wild animals.

Anyone who sees an abnormally acting raccoon is asked to call the Suffolk County Police Department non-emergency number at 631-852-COPS or the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation at 631-444-0250.
