The Riverhead Senior Center at 60 Shade Tree Lane, will be open as a cooling center on Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the town announced Wednesday morning.

“Residents looking to escape the heat are encouraged to utilize this cooling center,” Riverhead Supervisor Jerry Halpin said.

All outdoor recreation programs will be canceled after 10:30 a.m. Thursday, and all day Friday, Riverhead Police said in a weather advisory Wednesday morning.  The Recreation Department’s summer camp will be moved inside both days.

Town beach facilities will be open until 9 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday, with lifeguards and beach attendants on duty between 11a.m and 6 p.m.  Restrooms at beaches will be open until 9 p.m. on both days.

All town outdoor facility rentals will be canceled.

An extreme heat warning remains in effect through Friday night, the National Weather Service said. Heat index values are forecast to reach as high as 110º.
