Fog is expected to reduce visibility across Long Island and the New York City metro area through midmorning Friday, with locally dense fog possible during the morning commute, according to a special weather statement issued by the National Weather Service in Upton.
The statement is in effect until 10 a.m. Friday for New York City, Long Island — including Suffolk and Nassau counties — parts of the lower Hudson Valley and southern Connecticut.
The weather service said areas of fog will lead to visibilities below 1 mile, and the fog may become locally dense at times, with visibility dropping to a quarter mile or less.
Motorists are urged to use caution if traveling, as visibility may change rapidly. The weather service recommends slowing down, using low-beam headlights and leaving plenty of distance between vehicles.
After the fog lifts, a cold front is expected to move through Friday afternoon into early evening, bringing a chance of showers and thunderstorms. The weather service said a couple of storms could be strong, with an isolated instance of damaging winds possible. For Riverhead and the North Fork, the forecast calls for areas of fog before 8 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms later in the day, with a high near 81 and a 40% chance of precipitation.
Conditions are expected to turn cooler and drier Friday night behind the front, with mainly dry, seasonable weather anticipated for the weekend, the weather service said.
