Anne Marie Schmitt of Riverhead died Sept. 17, 2026. She was 94 years old.
Born Aug. 30, 1932, in Mandal, Norway, she was the daughter of Jules and Francis Thomson. She immigrated to the United States with her family in 1937, arriving through Ellis Island, and grew up in Roosevelt. She graduated from Hempstead High School. She married Philip Schmitt Feb. 5, 1956, at St. Kilian Church in Farmingdale, and the couple made their home in Farmingdale until 1980, when they moved to Riverhead. A farmer’s wife and mother, she raised three children and supported the family farm. She also kept the books for the farm business and took daily orders from local farm stands.
She was predeceased by her husband, Philip, in July 2026, and her son-in-law, Richard Stueber. She is survived by her children, Philip (Debbie) Schmitt, Kathy (Stanley) Zilnicki and Stacie Stueber; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors Sunday, Sept. 20, from 3 to 7 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. at St. Isidore Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow.
