Downtown Riverhead came alive with the arts Sunday afternoon, as the 29th annual Community Mosaic Street Painting Festival drew thousands of visitors to Main Street to create and view chalk art, enjoy live music and browse dozens of vendor booths. Photo gallery.

Chalk artists transformed a portion of East Main in Riverhead into a colorful canvas during the Mosaic Street Painting Festival yesterday, a celebration of the arts hosted by East End Arts on Memorial Day weekend since 1996.

There's lots to do around Riverhead this holiday weekend, with the annual street-painting festival on Main Street, and beaches opening for the season.

East End Arts will host the Community Mosaic Street Painting Festival on May 28,  the only community outdoor art event of its kind found anywhere on Long Island.

The popular Community Mosaic Street Painting Festival will take place on Memorial Day weekend again this year, as it had every year since its debut in 1996 — until pandemic disruptions in 2020 and 2021. The daylong celebration of the arts and community will take place on East Main Street and on the grounds of East End Arts on Sunday, May 29, from 12 noon to 5 p.m.

The 25th annual Community Mosaic Street Painting Festival brought colorful chalk art, music, dance and family fun to East Main Street yesterday.

It's a good thing chalk doesn't melt. Because if it did, today would have been the day for it.

For the first time in its 22-year history, the Community Mosaic Street Painting Festival had to be postponed due to rain. This year's festival was also the last with its founder at the helm, as East End Arts executive director Patricia Snyder prepares to retire from the organization at the end of the year.

With rain in the forecast tomorrow, the street painting festival will take place on Monday, May 29 from 2 to 5 p.m.
