There is plenty to do this Memorial Day weekend in Riverhead Town and on the North Fork.
The biggest event going on in Riverhead is the Community Mosaic Street Painting Festival on Sunday, where anyone can come and decorate East Main Street downtown with chalk art from 12 to 5 p.m. Clear skies are in the forecast for the event, which also features live music, food trucks, and vendors selling artisan and local wares.
Hosted by East End Arts, the event is inspired by the 16th century Italian street painters, Il Madonnari, who created chalk masterpieces of the Madonna on the streets of their village.
Artist squares can be purchased for $25 in advance and $30 on the day of the event. Artists will receive chalk and blending tools.
Town beaches will be open starting tomorrow. Beaches will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends until June 24, when they will be open seven days a week until and including Labor Day (Sept. 4.)
Beach parking permits can be purchased on the Riverhead Recreation Department website. Bronze permits, which cover only parking, are $20 for residents ($5 for residents over age 60.) Parking permits are not available to non-residents.
Splish Splash water park in Calverton also opens tomorrow. The park’s opening weekend features the Nature Nick Animal Show, which includes owls, hawks, foxes, toucans, snakes and more. The new show can be seen multiple times a day on the stage next to the entrance of Giant Twister.
Further east on the North Fork, Harbes Family Farm in Mattituck is hosting its Baby Animal Festival tomorrow through Monday.
The North Fork Community Theatre in Mattituck also continues its run of the musical “Sunday in the Park with George.” Performance times and ticket information here.
