The Riverhead Town Board voted unanimously Tuesday to obtain an appraisal of 1458 Middle Road in Calverton, an initial step toward a possible purchase of the property for preservation.

Three candidate forums scheduled Oct. 15, 17 and 21 will give Riverhead residents a chance to hear from supervisor candidates Jerry Halpin and Ken Rothwell.

A crowd of 92 people attended the Greater Calverton Civic Association meeting Friday night to learn about "Warehouse Breeds" at Riley Avenue Elementary School, where community members presented information about how traditional warehouses have evolved into distribution and fulfillment centers to accommodate online retailing.

As the Riverhead Town Board remains divided on whether to pursue a moratorium on industrial development in Calverton, more than 100 people rallied in front of Town Hall yesterday to encourage the board to halt development until the town’s comprehensive planning process is complete.

Until a comprehensive and cumulative approach to zoning and the extent of industrial development in our community can be determined by the residents in coordination with the town board and its consultants there should be a moratorium on further industrial development in the 11933 zip code.

The developer discussed the proposed 22,000-square-foot facility with the Greater Calverton Civic Association last night.
