Riverhead Highway Department crews have been out all night spreading salt and sand on local roads, which Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski reports are in “good shape” this morning.There are no delayed school openings this morning.

Four inches of wet snow blanketed the town overnight, Riverhead Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski said Tuesday morning. Expect slushy conditions to make for slippery travel this morning, he said.

(Updated Tuesday, Feb. 28 5:30 a.m.) Plow trucks will be called into service for the first plowable snowfall of the season, with the arrival of a winter storm system expected to drop 3 to 5 inches of wet snow across the local area tonight into midday tomorrow.

People returning to work and school after the holiday break will be dealing with the first accumulating snowfall of the winter on their way home this afternoon: 1-3 inches of snow is expected, according to the National Weather Service, which has issued a winter weather advisory for our area.

The National Weather Service forecast is calling for total accumulations of four to eight inches across the region before the snow ends Friday.

The potential for several inches of snow tomorrow into Friday has Long Island under a winter storm watch. The watch is in effect until 4 p.m. Friday, the National Weather Service said this morning.

Two to four inches of snow are forecast for Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

(Updated: Tuesday, 6 a.m.) Mixed precipitation is expected with total snow and sleet accumulations of two to four inches and ice accumulations of up to 1/10 of an inch, according to the National Weather Service, which has issued a winter weather advisory for Tuesday.

Vehicles became stranded this evening at the bottom of Baiting Hollow Hill on Sound Avenue, said Riverhead Highway Superintendent George Woodson, who urged motorists to slow down and use extra caution on local roads tonight. There were reports of multiple motor vehicle accidents as temperatures fell and a mixture of rain and sleet changed over to snow.
