Riverhead Highway Department crews have been out all night spreading salt and sand on local roads, which Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski reports are in “good shape” this morning.

There are no delayed school openings this morning.

“Road conditions will only improve as the temperature rises and any remaining icy spots melt,” he said.

Riverhead Police said motorists and pedestrians should use extra caution while traveling. Reduce speed and allow extra time, police said in a travel advisory last night.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. today, the National Weather Service said.

The National Weather  Service forecast for Riverhead today calls for a mix of snow, freezing rain and sleet until about 3 p.m., then a chance of rain and snow after 4 p.m. Daytime high temperatures will reach about 36ºF. No additional snow accumulation and no ice accumulation is expected, according to the weather service forecast.

Zaleski said the highway department will immediately begin preparing trucks and equipment for more snow Friday.

A coastal low is forecast to pass southeast of Long Island late this week, according to the National Weather Service, which will bring snow to the local region Friday into Saturday. “For now, a prolonged light snow event is expected,” the weather service said in a long-term forecast discussion statement.
