A representative of the Long Island Farm Bureau and individual farmers raised concerns about a proposed code revision that would ban parking on both sides of Sound Avenue for the whole of its 13-mile length in the Town of Riverhead.

A collision between a truck and an SUV on Sound Avenue in Aquebogue sent two people to the hospital and closed the road to traffic this afternoon.

A ban on parking along the length of both sides of Sound Avenue will again be the subject of a Riverhead Town Board public hearing next month.

The town board Thursday discussed the traffic consulting firm's recommendations for potential solutions to traffic on Sound Avenue, including the unpopular idea of a two-way center turning lane.

The Town of Riverhead’s traffic planning consultants, hired in connection with the comprehensive plan update, have proposed widening Sound Avenue from about 28 feet to about 43 feet in order to create a two-way center turning lane and a five-foot bike lane on both sides of the roadway.

Riverhead Town’s chief planner, who is leading the town’s comprehensive plan update, says he’s never personally experienced the heavy traffic on Sound Avenue on a fall weekend — and doesn't want to. The Sag Harbor resident told a Greater Jamesport Civic Association meeting traffic issues on the South Fork make it hard to visit the North Fork on weekends.

The Riverhead Town Board will hold a public hearing Aug. 20 on a proposal to ban parking on the length of Sound Avenue, from Route 25A to the Southold Town line.

A four-car accident at the intersection of Sound Avenue and Northville Turnpike sent seven people to the Peconic Bay Medical Center this afternoon.

The bicyclist was airlifted via helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center with non-lifethreatening injuries, according to police.
