Winter storm event

A winter storm emergency has been declared in Riverhead as of 9 p.m. Saturday, for a major storm expected to bring heavy snow and strong winds to the area Sunday and Monday.

Town highway crews worked overnight to clear main roads and are working on side streets and developments Saturday morning, Riverhead Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski said.

(Updated 10:55 a.m.) A circuit problem left a large swath of central Riverhead without power, and power lines are arcing and burning in several places. The weather service has increased forecast snow amounts to 5-10 in.

Riverhead public schools will have a two-hour delayed start tomorrow. A winter storm warning remains in effect and the town has declared a winter snow event.
