A winter storm warning has been issued for Suffolk County, effective from midnight tonight until noon Friday.

Heavy snow is expected, with total accumulations of 5 to 7 inches, the National Weather Service said in the warning statement.

Travel will be difficult, the weather service said. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning commute.

Riverhead Town expects to declare a snow emergency overnight. Cars should not be parked in the street. Cars parked in the street are subject to impound by the Riverhead Police Department. Fines and fees will apply.

Residents should avoid nonessential travel during the storm.

When traveling, allow plenty of extra time and reduce speed. In case of emergency call 911 or 631-727-4500.

Riverhead Highway Department crews are ready for the storm, Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski said this afternoon.

“We have a great staff. They’re very qualified,” he said.
