Riverhead firefighters knock down stove fire at the Rendezvous

Riverhead volunteer firefighters made a quick stop of a grease fire that spread to the roof rafters of the Rendezvous restaurant on East Main Street this afternoon.

The fire started on a stove in the kitchen and spread up through the vent to the roof rafters, Riverhead Fire Department First Assistant Chief Joe Raynor said. Firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof in the back of the building, he said. They prevented the fire from spreading.

“It was a good stop,” Raynor said.

The call came in for a reported structure fire at the iconic Main Street eatery just before 3 p.m. this afternoon.

East Main Street remains closed to traffic between Union and Maple Avenues as of 3:45 p.m. The restaurant and the shops in an adjoining building, the Blue Duck Building, Ralph’s Ice Cream and Papa John’s Pizza. No one was injured.

The Riverhead fire marshal was called in to investigate. The scene was declared “under control” at 3:20 p.m.
