Statement of Assemblyman Marc Alessi (D-Shoreham) on budget cuts to balance budget:
“Families all over Long Island are tightening their belts and doing more with less. Stategovernment needs to follow their example and cut spending. Period. These cuts are going tohurt, but it’s the right thing to do. Anything else would be unacceptable for our alreadyoverburdened property taxpayers.
“I am fighting to keep state parks, like Orient Beach State Park, open–these parks notonly provide affordable recreation for working families, they also generate revenue for theirlocal communities. We need to make cuts that make sense.
“Agency consolidations and other reoccurring savings need to be realized to helpmitigate the deep cuts proposed for healthcare and education. New taxes and fees are not theway to balance the budget. Albany needs to get in step with what’s good for New York and cut state spending in a fair and responsible way. I will continue to work with my colleaguesin the legislature to ensure these cuts will not disproportionately affect Long Island families.”
