Michael Hubbard’s peers are coming together once again to raise money toward his recovery.
The Riverhead High School Key Club is holding a Battle of the Bands July 22 at Stotzky Park to benefit a fund set up for Michael, who was critically injured Memorial Day Weekend when gel candle fuel exploded in his face. The 14-year-old sustained third-degree burns over 40 percent of his body and he remains in a coma at the burn center at Stony Brook University Hospital.
“I am so touched by this,” Michael’s mother Nancy wrote on the Facebook event page. “Michael has been playing the drums since two years old and has been in band since fifth grade.”
Tickets to the event, which will be held at Stotzky Park at 7 p.m., are $10 per person. There will be food and refreshments for sale, as well as Michael Hubbard bracelets. All proceeds will be donated to the Michael Hubbard fund.
“I love you, Blue Waves,” Nancy wrote. “You are amazing me more and more.”
The Riverhead High School Class of 2011 recently donated $1,500 to the Michael Hubbard Fund as its senior class gift — usually a donation toward a physical improvement of the school grounds or community.
Numerous other fundraising events have been held to raise money for Michael’s recovery, including car washes, chinese auctions, and a bowling fundraiser.
The following bands are participating in the Battle of the Bands fundraiser: According to Jay, Arctor, Blazing Beaver Ducks, Coastline, Human Error, Potentially Insane, Project Thalen, The Entertainment, Silver Lining and Uh Oh! Stereo. A rain date has been set for July 29.
Two more fundraisers for Michael will be held in July as well. A buffet dinner will be held at Eagle’s Landing at Calverton Links on July 27, 6-10 p.m., which will include an open bar, carving station, live music by Terri Hines Band and special guests, a 50/50 raffle and a chinese auction. That event is $60 per person, $40 with a student ID, with all proceeds going to The Michael Hubbard Fund.
