Riverhead Central School District has broken ground today on the first phase of a $78.3 million building and renovation project that will be completed in stages over the next two-and-a-half years.

Officials gathered for a ceremonial groundbreaking at Phillips Avenue Elementary School, which is undergoing a $3.4 million construction project that includes a new library, new roof, new parking lots and new student drop-off loops. Renovations will also be made to sidewalks and bathrooms. Some classrooms will be reconfigured to create “specialized learning centers,” and improvements will be made to make the building ADA-compliant.

The start of construction was delayed about one month because the state education department took longer than the anticipated 12 weeks to give its approval to the plans.

All seven school board members were on hand for the groundbreaking, as was school superintendent Nancy Carney.

“This is a wonderful day for Riverhead,” Nancy Carney said in a press release.
