Riverhead has temporarily opened its yard waste facilities on Youngs Avenue to all town residents for storm debris disposal following the severe storm that swept through the town over the weekend.

The facilities will be open beginning today through Sunday, July 12, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., according to a notice issued by Supervisor Jerry Halpin’s office Tuesday afternoon.

The town yard waste facility, on the north side of Youngs Avenue, will be open Wednesday through Sunday. The highway debris facility, on the south side of Youngs Avenue, will be open Wednesday through Friday, July 10.

Proof of residency is required at both facilities.

The town said yard waste rules apply: only cars, pickup trucks and single-axle trailers will be permitted. Dump trucks, dual-axle trailers and commercial landscape vehicles are prohibited. Bamboo will not be accepted.

The town Highway Department is also conducting debris pickup for downed trees that originated in the town right of way, according to the notice.

“My team is working tirelessly to clean up the roads and create safe, passable roadways,” Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski said in the release. “The full cleanup will take some time,” he said, adding that he’s proud of the work and dedication of highway department employees in response to the July 4 storm and ensuing rains in the days immediately afterward.

Zaleski on July 5 said at least 50 trees had come down along town roads during the severe thunderstorm Saturday night that knocked out power for thousands of PSEG-LI customers in Riverhead. Many of the fallen trees and limbs blocked roadways, requiring highway crews to work overnight to clear roads and reopen them to traffic.
