Black Friday, the day that’s traditionally been the biggest retail shopping day of the year may soon be eclipsed by the the day that’s traditionally been set aside for family gatherings, feasts and football.

More and more stores are opening earlier and earlier on Thanksgiving Day, offering “door buster” deals to lure shoppers away from their holiday tables in search of savings on “must-have” items on their Christmas lists. Families may find themselves gathering for an earlier Thanksgiving meal if they want to take advantage of the sales of what some are calling “Gray Thursday” — or just to get their family sit-down dinner in before heading off to work at one of the big-box or factory outlet stores this Thanksgiving Day.

In 2013, shoppers took advantage of retailers’ early openings, with one-quarter of holiday shoppers visiting stores by 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, according to a survey conducted for the National Retail Federation.

Tanger Outlets in Riverhead, which had been opening at 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, will this year open at 6 p.m. Tanger will stay open until 2 a.m. and then reopen at 6 a.m. on Friday.

Target, which had opened up at 8 p.m., will also open at 6 p.m. tonight. It will remain open until late Friday night. Kmart opens at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning and stays open 42 hours straight.

If you have last-minute needs for your Thanksgiving table, area supermarkets are open for business this morning. (See hours below.)
