An eastbound Hampton Jitney coach with passengers aboard veered out of its lane of travel on County Route 58 and crashed into an SUV in an eastbound turning lane, according to Riverhead Police. The SUV was waiting to turn into the entrance to Gateway Plaza between Bob’s Discount Furniture and Applebee’s Restaurant, police said.

There were no injuries reported in the accident.

The driver of the SUV was able to drive his vehicle east to get it out of the intersection, despite the fact that the impact of the crash dislodged the rear passenger side wheel on his Hyundai SUV. He was the sole occupant of the Hyundai.

Officers responding to the scene backed the Jitney, with its passengers aboard, into the Applebee’s parking lot.

Riverhead Fire Department responded to clean up a fuel spill originating from the Hyundai.

The incident took place around 10:40 a.m. Wednesday. The accident remains under investigation, said police.
