The seven-mile Flanders Road repaving project, which began last October, is still on schedule to complete early this fall, state DOT spokesperson Eileen Peters said this afternoon.

Work was temporarily halted, but the contractor is “mobilizing” to complete the job at night, Peters said. She did not provide a start date.

“With less traffic, this will be safer and more efficient and will minimize the impact on motorists and businesses,” Peters said.

More than one-and-a-half  miles of resurfacing work remains between the Riverside traffic circle and Oak Avenue.

The $5.2 million Flanders Road repaving project is one of a dozen statewide benefitting from more than $100 million in repairs. The pothole-ridden road became the subject of public outcry last January after a 47-year-old woman was killed in a head-on collision with a utility truck. At the time, the condition of the road where the accident occurred was in especially bad shape and was cited by police as a factor in the crash. The driver of the utility truck was subsequently indicted on a felony criminally negligent homicide charge; prosecutors say he was “having an extended text conversation with his girlfriend at the time of the crash.” That charge is still pending in Suffolk County Criminal Court.

The Flanders Road repaving project involves removing the top layer of the pavement and replacing it with new asphalt and fresh pavement markings, including bike lane striping and more visible pedestrian crosswalks.

The project is being undertaken by Rosemar of East Moriches.
