Town Board wrap-up for Sept. 16

Bow-hunting for deer on on town property will take place again this year, from Oct. 5 through Dec. 6.

The town board Wednesday night authorized the annual hunt for town-owned property at the Calverton Enterprise Park as well as town-owned sites at 1751 Sound Avenue in Calverton, at 437 Youngs Avenue in Calverton and on Middle Road in Riverhead.

Town bow-hunting permits will be distributed pursuant to a lottery held last night at Riverhead Town Hall.

The archery season for deer on Long Island extends from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31 under NYS Department of Environmental Conservation regulations. There is a three-week shotgun season for deer in January. Written permission from the landowner is required. See the DEC website for additional information.

Locally, there are additional hunting opportunities in the state-owned Otis Pike and Sarnoff Pine Barrens preserves.

In other action at Wednesday’s meeting the town board:

• added Glen Road East, Harper Road, Laurel Lane, and Park Place in Baiting Hollow as “Town of Riverhead 189 Highways”;
• rescinded a resolution adopted June 16 that authorized the sale of the East Lawn building at 542 E. Main Street to I’m a Ruralpolitan Inc. (See prior story.)
• scheduled a public hearing on a code amendment to ban overnight parking (1 to 6 a.m.) in the municipal parking lot located between Union and Maple avenues;
• authorized a three-year retainer agreement with the town’s labor counsel, Richard Zuckerman, of the Melville law firm Lamb and Barnosky, pursuant to which the town will pay the firm $42,000 per 12-month period (June 1 through May 31);
• authorized water district superintendent to accumulate sick leave in excess of the 300-day accrual limit set forth in his employment contract;
• approved the excavation and exportation of 13,810 cubic yards of soils by TRW Properties LLC at property located at 1800 Old Country Road, Riverhead (Riverhead Auto Mall) for vehicle storage; the property owner will pay a $100 permit fee and $2 per cubic yard, totaling $27,720;
• approved the excavation and exportation of 121 cubic yards of soils by 1044 Parkway St LLC, for site development; the property owner will pay a $100 permit fee and $2 per cubic yard, totaling $342;
• authorized hiring the Hauppauge law firm of Siegel & Sitler to bring an action against the owners of property at 10 Meetinghouse Creek Road in Aquebogue “to enjoin the illegal use, occupancy and/or maintenance” of the site.
• authorized retaining Robert Hubbs of Patchogue for GIS and AutoCAD services at the rate of $60 per hour for up to 50 hours;
• accepted the resignations of Police Officer Thomas Condzella and of assistant senior citizens center manager Donna Trojanowski;
• authorized publication of a help wanted notice for a junior civil engineer (See advertisement.)
• approved special event permits for:
  • Darkside Productions Haunted House Walk (Oct. 2 – Nov. 1);
  • East End Rowing Institute Snowflake Regatta (Nov. 8);
  • Railroad Museum of Long Island Wooden Toy Train Play Days (Oct. 10 and 11);
